Brief Description of Organisation:
The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) is the national environmental research and development center dealing with changes in the environment, cause and effect relationships, means of resolving environmental problems and effects of policy measures. Marine research at SYKE aims at producing information and new solutions that help decision-makers to promote the protection and sustainable use of the Baltic Sea.
SYKE integrates a wide spectrum of marine research, catchment research, climate change research and socioeconomic research. Multidisciplinary research makes use of observations, experimental research, numerical models, prognoses and socio-economic studies, SYKE coordinates Baltic ferrybox project Alg@line that is a network for biological and physiochemical water quality observations. Marine Research Centre of SYKE coordinates the national Finnish Marine Research Infrastructure (FINMARI), which combines all major components of the Finnish marine research community. It is a distributed infrastructure network of field stations, research vessels and multi-purpose icebreakers, laboratory facilities, ferryboxes, fixed measurement platforms and buoys. In addition, a next-generation field station is being constructed on the island Utö by FMI, with SYKE collaboration: Atmospheric and Marine Research Station providing continuous, real-time data from the marine environment and the lower atmosphere.
